Do you like wonton and egg soup? Have you ever thought about combining a beautiful wonton soup with a fairytale egg drop soup? It is a very comforting, warming and delicious soup that you can serve as any meal of the day. Let’s make pancake soup with eggs.
Wontons have been a Chinese staple, as are dumplings or cookware. With their fluffy wrappers and delicious fillings, we love wontons for any meal or occasion.
Egg soup It is a popular Chinese style soup with streaky egg liquid.
Wonton soup and egg soup, when combined, provide the perfect harmony of tastes and textures. While the egg drop soup offers a delicate and light touch, the wontons add a delicious taste to the dish. I love this combination!
Cooking tips
Wontons: Although using frozen dumplings is one option, I would suggest making your own for fresh flavor.
Soup broth: You can use a clear broth such as chicken or pork broth for this recipe. Or simply water them if there is no stock by hand.
How to fold wontons
Let’s start by making fresh wontons.
- Place the wonton wrapper on one hand, then place about a teaspoon of the filling in the middle.
- Dip your finger in water and wet the edges of the wrapper. This will help seal the wonton.
- Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Make sure there is no air trapped inside. Pull the bottom two corners of the triangle together and press to close.
This method is best for wontons cooked in soup. If you need more tips and techniques on how to fold wontons in different ways, check here.
Step by step wonton soup
- Cooking wontons – Boil about 500 ml of water in a small pot, then place the wontons in it and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the wontons are well cooked.
Note: If you are using frozen wonton, add about 1/2 cup of cold water in two batches. Adding cold water can help produce evenly cooked wontons just like the method we used for boiled dumplings.
2. Prepare a bowl of sauce for the broth: Add the white pepper, light soy sauce, scallion oil, sesame oil and a very small pinch of salt to a serving bowl. Then drain the wontons and transfer them to a serving bowl.
3. Preparing egg drop soup: Add the beaten egg liquid, and stir gently to create an egg drop flower. Pour the egg drop soup over the cooked wontons.
4. Combine egg drop soup with wonton: Pour the egg drop soup into serving bowls and let’s finish the wonton egg soup.
About cornstarch
You may notice that in many other egg drop soup recipes like Tomato Egg Drop Soup or Basic Chicken Broth Egg Drop Soup, we always use cornstarch to thicken the soup base so the egg drops can spread and maintain shape.
But I don’t use it in this recipe. Egg drop soup without cornstarch is also very popular in China because it is lighter and fresh. Without the influence of starch, the taste can be stronger.
So I highly recommend this because the wontons are quite large and we don’t follow even cooking for this particular one.
If you prefer a thicker version: Mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with another 2 tablespoons of water. The mixture is then poured into the soup base after removing the cooked wontons.

Press the edges together to seal tightly, ensuring the fold is perfect and paper-proof. Before giving it a wonton shape, make sure the wrapper is positioned correctly on your hand. The pointed edge should be facing you.
-
Hold the wrapper from both sides with both hands. Fold one edge inward. Repeat the same with the other edge so that the two edges do not overlap to form a wonton shape. Repeat to finish all the wontons.
Season the soup broth
-
Add sesame oil, soy sauce, white pepper, and a pinch of salt to serving bowls.
